Buying a inverter is an important step, There are a lot of different ones that do different things in different ways, some will work for you where as others could be a problem depending on your application.
Below is a summary of inverters and information based on types. they can and do vary within the main sets of inverters.
Grid tied inverters.
Grid tied inverters work in parallel with the grid, as do hybrid. They need to be on the ENA register to be legally installed. Many inverters available are NOT on the ena register can Cannot be legally installed. This includes used older inverter that may have been legal to install but no longer are. The current requirement is G99, G98 and G100.
Grid tied, tend to not have batteries, therefore send any unused power to the grid, in the same parallel hybrid inverters, but have a battery and the export varies.
Hybrid inverters.
A hybrid inverter is a device that can combine different sources of power, such as solar panels, batteries, and the grid, into a single system. It can convert DC electricity from solar panels into AC electricity for use in the home or business, and also manage the charging and discharging of batteries. Some can work with the grid and some cannot.
Grid Attached inverters.
Grid Attached inverters, are inverters like a hybrid but, they do not return or work in parallel with the grid and continue to work when the grid goes down. The grid attachment can be used to charge the battery or as a pass though for higher loads. These also can be used for backup (UPS) functionality for your whole home.
Off grid inverters
Off grid inverters work without a grid connection, they may have a generator connection to support charging or pass though power, but will have solar and battery to provide power. typically this type of inverter can NOT be attached to the grid and cause a trip due to the inverter not having a earth bond connection relay detachment. Often this are missold as hybrid inverters
Parallel inverters.
Inverters of various types can work in parallel. but most will not. grid forming and grid parallel are two different formats which can cause serious problems if mixed or paired wrongly. There are inverters that can work together called Parallel, this is typical for off grid or grid attached installations where you may have more than one inverter, upgrade to two, or have a standby. Some grid tied hybrids will also work with other types of inverters.
Stand alone inverters
Stand alone inverters are just inverters, they produce power from DC, They connection to the battery and produce 230v AC power. They come in various power outputs but in different wave forms. The wave form is the power ( see image). what you use can work on some items, but not on others, it is best to have a pure sine inverter.

Please Note: We do not list all of the inverters that are available, there are far to many. We match our clients with inverters if you are having a system from us, or we can advise you to limit the returns and errors in wrongly buying and inverter that may not work for you.
