Generator Kits (inverter attachment)

RenewSolar offer a generator kit for your home 32 amp Genport kit — RenewSolar
This device is used to attach off grid or micro solar to your home.

For DIY enthusiasts, attaching a small solar array, such as balcony solar, is not feasible in the UK due to regulations. Directly plugging in solar panels is not permitted. This stems from an older regulation where generators were connected using a “suicide cable” with plugs at both ends, creating a risk at each end due to live pins.

The generator port connects to the home’s wiring and features a covered plug without exposed pins, including a built-in isolator as required by regulations.

For off-grid applications, where you might want to run your home or workspace independently, it’s advisable to use an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) to prevent any contact between the off-grid system and the grid.

Our shop offers items for £60.00 that can handle up to 32 amps, equating to 7360 kW of power.

Regarding socket replacement, if you’re installing micro solar, you could connect the AC Bus cable to the generator port, which links to the micro inverters. The box can be mounted on the wall and should have its own cable from the consumer unit (fuse box). Many with small solar setups may connect the box to the ring circuit in place of a standard socket, but this limits you to approximately 6 amps input (1380W), and you would need to install a protection box.

The optimal solution is to hire a professional to install the box with a dedicated cable from the consumer unit, ensuring it is protected as a power source.

Poor installations can jeopardize the safety of your home and its occupants. For more information, you can visit the forum link or review the BS7671 guidelines on this website. If you’re unsure about the process, it’s best to seek professional advice.
