Fitting euro plug and play solar in the UK

Europe has been aiding its citizens with the cost of living by granting temporary legal status for plug-and-play solar installations, commonly referred to as balcony solar. The UK’s laws and restrictions are similar, but there are complications due to legal and taxation issues, often described as a ‘catch-22’.

The UK boasts some of the safest electrical systems globally, with superior plugs and sockets and necessary protections. However, outdated laws that failed to anticipate technological advancements have led to issues, such as the ‘suicide cable’. the technology to terminal power more specifically, but no issues have been reported in over 400,000+ installations.

For installation of a solar plug-and-play system in the UK, adherence to BS7671 is mandatory, as you will confirm by signing for building control and the DNO in G98 and G99 applications.

Installation requirements include:

  • Installing on the feed (line side), which necessitates a new circuit. This cannot be a DIY project unless inspected by building control and confirmed to be up to code.
  • Costs may vary, so it’s advisable to get multiple quotes. this negates the protection box.
  • Installing on your ring circuit with protection from the inverter as detailed in the post referenced. This involves modifying the socket to accommodate the device and confirming it forms a ring circuit.
  • The spur must also have downstream protection for the ring and the math undertaken.
  • The plug must be removed during installation.

Before proceeding, ensure that your inverter is listed on the ENA register.

The reality is that flexible plug-in solar systems may not be as adaptable or easy to plug in as suggested. While a commando plug is an option, it may not be aesthetically pleasing. If you opt for a spur with a cable to the inverter, mobility will be limited. However, with a ‘protection box’, it’s advisable to install the box near the spur for convenience.
