G98 and G99 Notice

A G98 form is a document that must be submitted to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) within 28 days of commissioning a new small-scale generation installation, such as solar panels, at a single or multiple premises. The form provides information about the location, output, and protection of the installation, and ensures compliance with the G98 connection procedures.
The G98 connection procedures are a simple and fast way to connect fully type tested installations under 16A per phase to the low voltage grid.

A fully type tested inverter is an inverter that has been approved by the Energy Networks Association (ENA) and has a certificate to confirm that it meets the requirements for connecting to the low voltage grid. Fully type tested inverters are used for small-scale generation installations, which are a simple and fast way to connect to the grid without needing a formal application or agreement and are under 3.68Kw in power.

A G99 solar application is a document that must be submitted to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before or after installing a solar photovoltaic (PV) system with a generation capacity of more than 16A (3.68kW) per phase when upgrading. The application provides information about the location, output, and protection of the solar PV system, and ensures compliance with the G99 connection procedures. The G99 connection procedures are a set of technical and operational requirements for connecting any form of generation device that runs in parallel or synchronised with the mains electrical utility grid.

The G99 solar application must include the following information:

  • A completed G99 application form, which contains details such as the site address, contact details, metering arrangements, and declaration of compliance.
  • A location plan showing the site boundaries and access points.
  • A site layout plan showing the position of the solar PV modules, inverters, cables, isolators, and meters.
  • A manufacturer’s specification sheet for the solar PV modules and inverters, confirming that they are fully type tested and approved by the Energy Networks Association (ENA).
  • A witness testing report, which verifies that the solar PV system has been installed and commissioned according to the G99 connection procedures and the manufacturer’s instructions. Witness testing is a process where the DNO or an authorised representative inspects and tests the solar PV system on site.

The G99 solar application process can take up to 65 working days for the DNO to review and approve the application, depending on the size and complexity of the solar PV system, this can be longer in summer with the large volume of applications. The DNO may also charge a fee for processing the application and conducting the witness testing. Once the application is approved, the solar PV system can be connected to the grid and start generating electricity.

When you do not need a G99 or G98

If you are off grid, you will not need to make these applications. You also do not need to apply if you are grid attached. Grid attached is a inverter that does not work in parallel with the grid, it is attached as a charger and pass through only. This does NOT mean a zero export setting. Your inverter should be able to run without a grid connection.
